  • Status Update Dec 9, 2010

The Shoal Runner 22 "fisher" had it's first "sea trial" today. The trial went well but their are some improvements that will be made soon. The propeller pitch will be reduced slightly to allow engine RPM to reach the recommended 3500-3600. A spray chine will be fitted from bow to approximatly 15 feet aft. Both changes were anticipated. Photos show the boat in the paint scheme that would be normal for a work boat in Florida. I assume the boat will be repainted to suit the tastes of the buyer. The helm seat will be configured to suit the buyer. I visualize a 52 quart cooler seat with back rest that adjusts to become a leaning post.

Here are some features of the boat:
. BS 1088 spec 1/4 inch plywood sides, and AC fir 1 inch ply bottom covered with fiberglass and epoxy. Seams are triple f-glass taped with epoxy. All wood is epoxy saturated. ( 20 gallons epoxy used)
. raised floor for self draining cockpit is bonded to hull sides and twin stringers that straddle the engine compartment.
. dry weight 1500 lbs, fuel capacity 27 gallons
. 30 BHP Beta diesel, Teleflex steering and engine controls, easy lift engine cover, open 360 degree engine and ancilliaries service access
. Center console has forward access for a Porta Pottie or as a hanging locker for foulies. Large dry storage for and aft. Large anchor locker forward.
. for and aft storage compartements are raised casting platforms.
. Atkin tunnel drive 6 inch draft

My performance targets are 20 MPH cruise and 13 MPG with 1400 lb load. Lightly loaded, the draft will be 7 inchs and the prop/rudder can be fully protected at that draft.

. A 22 ft super shoal inboard utility that delivers outstanding fuel efficiency

  • A green solution for many from a proven design and technology! This boat should deliver over 13 miles per gallon at an 18 knot cruise speed.
  • 22 foot Atkin design “Shoals Runner”
  • A 6 inch draft inboard utility boat that is capable of 20 knots with a 25 BHP motor.  We visualize this boat as an economical gentleman’s runabout, a cottage tender, a  flats fishing boat for personal or charter use, or a commercial water taxi. One of the boats virtues is an extremely small wake at all speeds. Another is very low fuel consumption at speed. Not a fast boat but one that can produce a higher average speed on trips that include wake restrictions.  Add to this the quite, reliable propulsion of a small diesel with a protected straight shaft driven propeller.

The unique Atkin design that facilitates this is a flat bottom (ala Pirogue) double end hull with adequate beam amidships to plane. The propeller is in a dual feed tunnel that also adds stabilizing buoyancy aft.

The 1 inch = 1 foot model from the offset table helped visualize the hydro dynamics and gage construction effort. It also allows evaluation of surface shape changes above the waterline to accommodate aesthetic preferences.

I believe that open boats should have self bailing cockpits and sufficient flotation to constitute a “life raft” in the worst case scenario. So this boat will have a raised cockpit sole with a stringer/grid support that adds strength and provides buoyant chambers.
