MYPWCBOATS  Process

Engineering driven communication with the customer is conducted  before, during and after construction and delivery. This begins with a detailed questionnaire of customer wants and usage. Preliminary design engineering specifications and a sketch are derived from this. With customer input and approval the hard line design and drafting begins. Designs can be origninal Peter Welch designs or from any source that will make consulting available. Drawing details are developed to meet customer wants.

The customer approves or modifies design direction from accurate layout drawings and performance calculations. The total project cost is estimated at this point. The customer makes a small initial payment for design services and a scale model is constructed to confirm proposed construction methods and aesthetics. This model is sent to the customer for comment and is their property. Customer input results in redesign or approval.

With approval a bill of materials is developed and the construction begins with the customer‘s purchase of the materials. Construction to completion is relayed to the customer via weekly reports with photos. Time to delivery varies with complexity. Anticipated time from questionnaire to sea trial is 12 months.

Below is an example graphic of time line and steps to build a custom boat. This assumes known design parameters or an existing design that is grown or shrunk to suit customer wants. A unique hull design requires more design time. Customization of an existing boat may take less time, but construction may be slowed by need to work in the confines of reusable structure. Each project gets a new, unique project time and cost plan. Also shown ($) are the payment points that are based on agreed upon deliverables.

Project pay points ($) promote accurate discussion and resolution of open issues and cost function trade offs.   Pay by project segment also minimizes total cost by elimination of builder loans.

PWCBOATS follows the methods of The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction *, in methods, materials, and quality tests. Their approach to wood/epoxy construction includes strength and quality testing. This method maximizes design flexibility and results in superior strength-to-weight-ratio boats with proven low maintence, and very long life. Their award winning multi hull designs are proven long lived and ultra light. (System brand) Their success in materials and methods (West System brand) has been emulated by many chemical companies.
